On Jan. 12, 2007, the Academy announced a policy change for its AAD Recognized Category 1 CME Program. All recognized programs are now required to provide AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ (as of Jan. 1, 2008).
AMA PRA Category 1 Credit only can be offered by organizations accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) or a state medical society. The AAD is accredited and all CME activities it sponsors are designated for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit.
How CME providers can obtain AMA PRA Category 1 Credit approval
If the provider is in a university or hospital setting, it might already be operating within an ACCME or state medical society accredited organization. Most universities and hospitals are accredited. Providing AMA PRA Category 1 Credit for the specific educational program can be as simple as contacting the institution's CME office. There may be intra-organizational fees for obtaining AMA PRA Category 1 Credit through the university's or hospital's CME office. These fees are established by the accredited institution and can range from several hundred to several thousand dollars per educational activity.
If the provider is not with an accredited organization, there are other options to consider.
- Seek accreditation from the ACCME or the State Medical Society: The ACCME accredits organizations with a national audience and State Medical Societies accredit organizations with an intrastate audience. Providers interested in pursuing accreditation should contact the appropriate accreditation body for help in navigating the process. The link above offers additional resources as well as links to the ACCME website, which contains contact information for the appropriate accreditor.
- Seek a joint sponsorship relationship with an accredited provider: Many accredited organizations offer joint sponsorship opportunities with non-accredited providers. For more information about joint sponsorship relationship, please contact the ACCME.
The Academy is dedicated to providing support and guidance to organizers of its currently recognized programs during this transition. The resources below have been developed by the Academy to assist providers with the transition to require AMA PRA Category 1 Credit. Additional resources may be created as needed.
