Learning Objectives:
Following this course, the attendee should be able to:

  • Recognize alopecias in both horizontal and vertical histologic sections.
  • Differentiate histopathologically the various types of scarring and non-scarring alopecia.
  • Identify the value and importance of clinical-pathologic correlation and of ancillary studies to increase diagnostic yield.

Description:
The histopathology of alopecia in transverse and vertical sections of scalp biopsies will be presented in the setting of clinical scenarios. The grossing technique, the importance of the clinical approach in biopsy taking, and the key histopathologic features that aid in differentiating scarring from non-scarring alopecias will be reviewed in a basic and step-wise format. The use of special stains and of immunofluorescence will be discussed. The main types of scarring and non-scarring alopecias will be illustrated.
