Learning Objectives:
Following this course, the attendee should be able to:

  • Apply the basic principles of confocal microscopy
  • Classify both benign and malignant lesions by identifying specific structures and features of these neoplasms

Description:
Reflectance confocal microscopy is a non-invasive imaging technique that allows for the en face (horizontal plane) visualization of microscopic structures and cellular detail of the epidermis, dermo-epidermal junction, and superficial dermis. The principle of RCM is similar to ultrasound, but instead of ultrasound waves the system is based on the optical reflectivity. This course will discuss the equipment, principles, terminology, and the most common lesions imaged with this device. Experts with confocal microscopy will present educational cases with audience participation.
