American Academy of Dermatology statement on skin cancer misinformation

American Academy of Dermatology President Seemal R. Desai, MD, FAAD

ROSEMONT, Ill. (Sept. 4, 2024) — With the summer drawing to a close, the American Academy of Dermatology has noticed an increase in online and media misinformation regarding skin cancer risk and sun protection. It is critically important for the public to understand that unprotected exposure to UV rays is a major risk factor for skin cancer. Your skin is damaged every time it is sunburned. As the damage builds over time, the risk for skin cancer increases. One in five Americans will get skin cancer and nearly 20 die from melanoma each day. It is important to seek shade, wear protective clothing and apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to uncovered skin.

No matter the time of year, it’s important to protect yourself from the sun, even on cloudy days.
