Soon after I began medical school, my father was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma. He died 10 months later.

Six weeks after he died, I was diagnosed with melanoma. My skin cancer was excised, and I was cured.

The intervention to stop my melanoma was in time; my father’s was not.

The stark difference between my father’s outcome and mine played a large role in my decision-making about becoming a dermatologist myself.
