Doing fun activities and making friends

Delaney loved participating in summer camp activities such as fishing.
I heard about AAD Camp Discovery from an AAD member dermatologist. Dr. Ruth Ann Vleugels, who is my dermatologist at Boston Children’s Hospital, recommended Camp Discovery to me. She knows that I love to be active, and also love to do arts and crafts. Attending Camp Discovery would allow me to participate in those summer camp activities, plus give me the chance to meet other kids with skin conditions like me.

And she was right — I loved Camp Discovery. It was awesome! I liked having s’mores and doing fun summer camp things like the activities at the lake. But I most liked that I got to meet other people with skin conditions like me. This also let me find out what we have in common as well as what makes us unique.

Camp Discovery was a good experience for me because the other campers and I got to do things that we don’t always get to do. For example, the people in wheelchairs may not normally be able to go fishing. But at Camp Discovery, they can!

My time at Camp Discovery let me meet other people with skin conditions like me. The other kids I met also understood problems that I might be facing because of my skin condition — problems that they had a first-hand understanding of.

I think everyone should go to Camp Discovery because it’s such a fun time with the activities there. You also make friends that you get to see there every summer. I’m going to go to Camp Discovery every year, for as long as I can, even after I’m done being a camper.
