Opening doors and paying it forward

AAD member John Zampella, MD, FAAD, loved participating in the AAD’s Leadership Institute programs.

Dr. Zampella’s story

I am an Associate Professor of Dermatology at NYU School of Medicine. I am excited to share my experiences with the American Academy of Dermatology Leadership Forum (LF) and the Academic Dermatologist Leadership Program (ADLP). These programs not only enhanced my leadership skills but also significantly shaped my professional journey in dermatology, helping me get promoted to Associate Professor.

Participating in the LF and ADLP opened many doors for me, both personally and professionally. The mentorship I received has been pivotal. Guided by seasoned leaders in dermatology, I gained insights and strategies that have proven essential in my development as a leader within my department as well as in my clinic. The advice and encouragement from my mentors equipped me with the confidence and skills needed to navigate complex situations involving contract negotiation and conflict resolution, and helped me inspire those around me.

The networking opportunities provided by these programs were equally invaluable. The connections I made have led to numerous opportunities to contribute more deeply to our community. The LF taught me the importance of involvement in our Academy. For example, one of the leaders suggested I get involved in the AAD LGBTQ+ expert resource group. I didn’t even know this existed! I not only got involved, but I’m currently the Co-Chair of the group. This suggestion also inspired me to apply to be on an AAD committee. I applied and I was subsequently appointed to the State Society Relationship Committee. This involvement further honed my leadership skills and expanded my professional network.

The journey didn’t stop at personal growth; it also inspired me to pay it forward. As a mentor to others, I now pass on the knowledge and skills I acquired, continuing the cycle of mentorship and leadership. About a year ago, I got a new medical assistant. I noticed right away that she was very intelligent and a great worker. Implementing some of the skills I learned through the LF and ADLP, I sat her down and asked what she wanted to do with her career. She was not sure. I encouraged her to think about her goals and helped to mentor her. Now she is enrolled in a 4-year on-line bachelors program for business administration. I am really proud of her!

I highly recommend both the LF and ADLP. The personal and professional growth I have experienced is immeasurable, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunities these programs have provided me.
