Future leaders in the AAD
AAD member Kelly Tyler, MD, FAAD, was inspired by the Leadership Institute offerings.
Dr. Tyler’s story
A colleague of mine at Ohio State University’s Department of Dermatology, who had previously attended the AAD Leadership Forum, encouraged me to apply back in 2022. As the associate residency program director at the time, I had plans to soon transition into the residency program director position and thought this would be a valuable way to not only gain leadership skills but also network with national leaders in our field.
Not knowing exactly what to expect, I arrived at the Leadership Forum back in May of 2022 eager to learn but had clearly underestimated the amazing impact this weekend would have on my future. Immediately, I met a plethora of big names in the field of dermatology, future mentors, and new colleagues from across the country.
The leadership sessions taught me so much about my leadership style and how to use my strengths to my advantage. Although I had previously considered myself a good speaker, the session on giving effective presentations helped me hone my skills and identify numerous areas for improvement. I took these learning points home to teach my residents and now use them during every presentation I give, especially at the AAD Annual Meeting. I consider myself to be a much more effective presenter after attending the Leadership Forum. Additional sessions on negotiation skills and crucial conversations have also been invaluable to me in my daily office practice and in dealing with conflicts involving staff, faculty, or residents.
I was so inspired by the Leadership Institute’s Leadership Forum that I have returned each year to act as a leader and mentor to incoming participants and am now slated to take on the position of chair in 2025. I have referred numerous colleagues to the program, and I am forever grateful for the support of AAD members, leaders, and staff for making the Leadership Institute possible. I hope to return every year to support this fantastic program and guide our future leaders in dermatology!
